This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when the couple transition from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the kind of problems that come with long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
